At 3M we seek to observe, understand and solve. What we believe is simple: We are people committed to helping other people. Every day we help tackle problems, big and small, in pursuit of our vision to improve every life.

Inspired by people: How 3M scientists develop everyday solutions

Listening and observing are key skills that 3M scientists bring to work as they endeavor to create solutions that improve lives

At 3M, every invention is inspired by people – their needs, their hurdles, and their desire for a better solution.

“We cannot solve what we don’t understand,” says Jayshree Seth, a 3M Corporate Scientist.

“Before we begin work on any project at 3M, we start by understanding the root of the problem we’re trying to solve. We look at things from a human point of view.”

It is this empathetic approach that allows 3M scientists to develop meaningful solutions for challenges people face across a wide variety of areas.

This skillset came to life as Jayshree worked on a solution benefiting a product that most parents may take for granted: a more secure, softer diaper closure.

As one of the early 3M inventions she collaborated on, Jayshree considered the needs of babies and caregivers throughout the exploration process.

“I envisioned what it’s like for babies to have diapers around them and how they could become more comfortable,” she recalled. “That’s what we do at 3M. We listen to people – even those who don’t have a voice.”
