• ScotchBlue™ takes our sustainability projects abroad.

Our European team has worked to attain PEFC certification for our paper-based painter’s and masking tapes while also moving to plastic-free packaging made with 90% recycled content.

    ScotchBlue™ Multi-Surface Masking Tape

Making 3M products better for the planet requires dedicated effort across the entire globe. In Europe, the ScotchBlue™ Brand is leading the charge by ensuring that the paper in ScotchBlue™ products is coming from sustainable sources and working to eliminate plastic packaging for all ScotchBlue™ Painter’s Tape and masking tape products.

We worked with our global suppliers to obtain PEFC chain of custody certification for our painter’s and masking tapes sold in Europe. The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) is a leading global alliance of national forest certification systems. It is an international non-profit, non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting sustainable forest management through independent third-party certification.

We didn’t stop at responsibly sourced paper either; in Europe, several types of our painter’s and masking tapes now come in packaging that is completely plastic-free. The packaging is also cleverly dual-sided to make room for two language groups, reducing the quantity of necessary packaging overall. The packaging, along with the optimized display shipper, are made using 90% or more recycled content. So far, the refreshed packaging and displays have allowed 3M and ScotchBlue™ to keep 9.1 metric tons of plastic from entering the waste system.

Continued efforts to rethink our long-standing products and packaging will propel 3M into even greater measurable change for good. As we implement these practices on more products, more brands, and more markets, this could spark real change for the better.
