    History of 3M Hutchinson

    Just after World War II, the community leaders of Hutchinson began discussing the issue of how best to utilize the local hemp plant since it was no longer needed to make rope for the war.  3M purchased the facility from the U.S. Government and began production of the world famous Scotch Brand Cellophane Tape on February 12, 1947.

    Since then, 3M has seen continued growth at our site by adding a wide variety of tapes, films, and consumer supplies.  In 1956, we underwent our first site expansion and renovation to keep pace with the rapidly growing world demand for tape by building a new plant adjacent to the original “Tape Plant.”  The two plants merged together in November of 1995 to become the largest manufacturing site in the United States.  In 2005, the two buildings were physically merged together during an expansion of ScotchBlue™ Painter's Tape.  Today, 3M Hutchinson has manufacturing capabilities for well-known brands such as Post-it® Flags, Pop-up Tape, ScotchBlue™ Painter's Tape, Command™ Strips, Nexcare™ Bandages, and Filtrete™ Filters.

    The combination of a well-established and diversified product base, numerous high potential new product lines, world-class employees, and strong community support has positioned 3M Hutchinson for continued success in the future.
