    History of 3M Corona

The 3M Corona plant is located on a site that is rich in history for our local community. Historically, the Butterfield Overland Stagecoach passed near the site on its route to deliver the mail between San Francisco and St Louis.

This location has been an active mine site for over 100 years. Temescal Rock Company operated the site at the turn of the 20th century, producing ballast rock for building railroads. It was then purchased by Blue Diamond Company, which operated a quarry that produced concrete aggregate until the plant was destroyed by fire in 1928. In 1924 the property was the site of the largest non-accident explosion in the world up to that point in time. 3M acquired the site in 1941 and began operations to produce roofing granules in 1948.

The rock quarried at this site is a hard trap rock which is blue-black in color flecked with white. It has the toughness and durability to withstand maximum weathering effects.

3M™ Classic Roofing Granules provide long-lasting‚ weather-resistant protection in an array of colors. Our granules are dense‚ non-porous‚ UV-ray resistant‚ and tough enough to stand up under handling. Made of a natural mineral product coated in ceramic‚ the granules meet the toughest tests of time‚ weather and visual appeal. Classic roofing granules from 3M are available in over twenty elegant colors to enhance any home.

3M™ Cool Roofing Granules are a 3M innovation  and an energy efficient breakthrough roofing granule technology. They can help keep a home cool with less energy consumption and lower energy costs because Cool Roofing Granules are up to four times more reflective than comparable conventional colored granules.

3M™ Smog-Reducing granules harness the power of the sun to turn roofing shingles into a pollution-fighting surface.  When the sun hits the granules, the photocatalytic coating transforms the smog pollution (nitrogen oxides) into water-soluble ions that safely wash away with rain.

Our granules are dense and non-porous, resist ultra-violet light and are tough enough to stand up under handling. And, they hold the long-lasting ceramic coatings added to create the ever-growing selection of colors demanded by the roofing market.
