The 3M™ Emery Cloth is designed for metal sanding jobs that require durability, such as removing rust and corrosion from metal – ideal for auto repair. Its tough emery abrasive combines various mineral oxides and is mounted on durable cloth backing that resists shredding and tearing. All of it is resin cured for overall durability to last much longer than standard sandpaper.

A Cloth Built for Auto Repair
Instead of common sandpaper which can fall apart during aggressive sanding, our 3M™ Emery Cloth makes a durable and effective tool for the challenges of sanding metal parts. Its J-weight cloth backing — lightweight, yet much more durable than paper — is ideal for sanding metal by hand or machine. Emery abrasive combines metal oxide minerals, such as non-fibrous aluminum oxide, for a tough abrasive surface that removes stock quickly yet leaves a fine finish. Choose from a complete range of grits from fine to coarse.

Recommended Applications

  • Stripping paint to metal
  • Deburring
  • Rust removal
  • Preparing metal surfaces for treatments and repair
Why Use an Emery Cloth Instead of Sandpaper?
An emery cloth is specially suited for sanding metal surfaces. Unlike traditional sandpaper, its durable cloth backing won't come apart or shred during aggressive sanding, helping to reduce the possibility of small fragments being left on the prepared surface. Traditional self-fracturing abrasives used on sandpaper can wear down quickly compared to emery abrasive, which includes non-fibrous metal oxide minerals to make it extra tough and help control tiny particles from breaking off and interfering with the next steps in metal paint preparation. The entire cloth is resin cured for added durability and resistance to heat, an added benefit especially during machine sanding.

The 3M™ Emery Cloth comes in assorted grits for use during the Prepare stage of our 3M™ Body Repair System.

About the 3M™ Body Repair System
Even a small repair can seem complex at first. So 3M's Body Repair System simplifies the entire automotive body repair process by dividing it into four stages:

Stage 1 — Prepare. This stage includes pulling dents, removal of paint and rust and efficient, effective masking of the area.

Stage 2 — Fill. This stage involves patching holes with reinforced filler and smoothing and shaping filler before painting.

Stage 3 — Paint. This stage includes painting the area and blending and smoothing primer and paint.

Stage 4 — Finish. The final stage for showroom-grade results: removing small defects, sealing and polishing clear coats and other painted surfaces.

3M supplies premium products such as abrasives, tapes, body fillers and tools for every stage. This system helps you work easily, efficiently and successfully across the entire body repair process.
