How 3M Acrylic Foam Tape layers work together

  • Product cross-section of acrylic foam tape with numbered callouts 1-4.

This tape delivers flexibility with balanced performance and value.

    1. Polyethylene liner
Dark red, polyethylene liner enables easy release and overall ease-of-use, plus it’s compatible with existing splicing and tabbing tapes. The lower liner release offers easy removal of liner from tape, improving uptime.

    2. High performance acrylic adhesive
With very high initial and final adhesion to medium surface and high surface energy automotive paints and substrates, the adhesive also provides excellent performance at a wide variance of temperatures.

    3. Highly conformable foam core
Following the shrinkage and elongation of the plastic part caused by temperature change, the foam core also has good stress relaxation properties and maintains bond-line aesthetics under normal stress loads.

    4. High performance acrylic adhesive
Providing final adhesion and holding power to automotive substrates, this acrylic adhesive meets a number of OEM specifications and excels in a variety of weather conditions.

Frequently asked questions

3M™ Acrylic Foam Tape GT7100 Series offers very good adhesion performance and high flexibility. These tapes are specifically designed for the attachment of automotive exterior and interior trim applications.
3M Acrylic Foam Tape GT7100 Series tapes feature a high-performance, acrylic-based adhesive on both sides of the tapes core.
The processing, tabbing, and splicing of 3M Series GT7100 tapes will be comparable to other 3M Acrylic Foam Tapes.
We recommended 3M™ Tabbing Tape 5400, 5081, or 5082 for heat-bond tabbing or 5300 for pressure sensitive adhesive tabbing. An extended tab liner tab or heatbond tab is recommended instead of a pressure sensitive adhesive tab.
Yes. Please contact your 3M application engineer to request.
The product is designed to sustain a temperature range of -40°F to 200°F (-40°C to 90°C) over the life of the vehicle.
For a large number of paints, the final bond strength performance will be reached after 24h RT.
For information about tape performance at high vs. low temperatures, please contact your 3M application engineer representative.
3M Acrylic Foam Tape Series GT7100 tapes have been tested to and pass customer specifications for most common automotive solvents like gasoline, diesel fuel, washer solvent, etc. Solvent resistance is a function of type of solvent, time of exposure and temperature. For information about specific solvents, please contact your 3M application engineer representative.
OEM specification data packages are available upon request. Please contact your 3M Application Engineer regarding your specific data request.
