This tape features an advanced adhesive system on both sides of a acrylic foam core that adheres well to traditional, medium surface energy, and scratch- and mar-resistant automotive paint and polymer systems.
3. Viscoelastic acrylic foam core
Exclusive to 3M, the acrylic foam core of 3M™ Acrylic Plus Tapes provides stress relaxation when high application loads are encountered, while maintaining tight bond-line aesthetics under normal conditions.
4. Liner options
3M™ Acrylic Plus Tape EX4511 is available in a T-version featuring a red polyethylene liner on one side and a clear 2 mil liner on the other side which is suitable for PSA tabbing.
3M Series EX4500 tapes are a line of products featuring 3M™ Acrylic Plus Tape technology designed for adhesion to Medium Surface Energy (MSE) plastic substrates without the need for adhesion promoter or other surface pre-treatment methods.
This new tape utilizes JLx adhesive – a proprietary 3M technology – on both sides of the tape to ensure compatibility with a variety of paints, including paints comprised of MVSS carbamate, epoxy/acid powder and 2K urethane.
No. Although the adhesive layers on either side of the product are very similar to the JL adhesive layer, they have been modified for primerless bonding to medium surface energy (MSE) plastics and even greater adhesion capability on difficult clear coat systems. This product also features a deep black core that has been reformulated to balance the properties of the more aggressive adhesive layers.
Any application featuring MSE plastics and/or chrome to difficult paint such as pillar garnishes, MSE body-side moldings, step plates, vent visors, and chrome appliqués. Some OEMs have tested and feel comfortable with this product as a sensor bonding tape to TPO substrates due to the low load requirements involved with these applications.
The MSE family of plastics consists of ABS, AES, ASA, PC+ABS, and Acrylic.
Yes, this product is die-cuttable. However, the aggressive nature of the skin adhesives are such that we recommend the product be weeded immediately following the die-cut procedure to avoid product "welding" back together after the cut. Die-cut performance is better at lower temperatures and artificial cooling will help improve performance at warmer temperatures.
3M Acrylic Plus Tape EX4500 Series tapes are available with a heat-tabbable liner option: 3M™ Acrylic Plus Tape EX4500T Series. 3M™ Tabbing Tape 5400 or 3M™ Tabbing Tape 5081 is recommended for use with 3M Acrylic Plus Tape EX4500T Series tapes. For PSA tabbing we recommend 3M™ Tabbing and Splicing Tape 5699 and use of an extended liner tab.
This product features a recently introduced ML-2 liner that offers excellent release characteristics.
The room temperature performance of this product on TPO is very impressive. However, the high temperature holding capability of the product may not meet the requirements for many of the more challenging automotive applications, such PP and PP+EPDM.
3M understands that development of automotive applications is typically driven by specification requirements and performance. Each OEM has their own unique criteria and 3M continues to develop suitable products to meet those demands. Please contact your 3M application engineer for support and to obtain specific test data.
