3M™ Acrylic Plus Tape WT4112 is a good choice for attaching EPDM/TPE components such as gaskets and seals. It features two adhesives, one on each side of a viscoelastic acrylic foam core, designed for robust performance even on complex contours and difficult automotive paint surfaces. A heat-activated adhesive forms an immediate bond to EPDM/TPE materials. Core provides stress relaxation when exposed to high application loads and maintains tight bond-line aesthetics under normal conditions.
Developed specifically for attaching gasket and weatherstrip seals in automotive applications, 3M™ Acrylic Plus Tape WT4112 features our heat-activated adhesive formulated for an immediate, consistent and durable bond to EPDM/TPE and other elastomeric materials. The adhesive is applied to the non-liner side of a viscoelastic acrylic foam core, which provides excellent conformability and wet-out that helps maintain seal integrity. The liner side of the core features our pressure-sensitive adhesive for bonding to a range of clear coats, MVSS, powder coats and other mar- and scratch-optimized auto paint systems. The dark gray color of this OEM approved tape helps create good bond-line appearance. The red Branded 3M liner is silicone-coated on one side, suitable for heat-bond tabbing. The tape is supplied on a levelwound roll for process optimization.
1. 3M Branded liner
Easy to identify, difficult to imitate: The red, 3M branded liner on 3M™ Acrylic Plus Tapes allows customers to quickly confirm that they are receiving the 3M quality they expect from their purchase.
2. Liner side adhesive
Liner-side adhesive is formulated for very high initial and final adhesion to scratch and mar-resistant paint systems.
3. Viscoelastic acrylic foam core
Exclusive to 3M, the acrylic foam core of 3M™ Acrylic Plus Tapes is engineered for stress relaxation when exposed to high stress loads, and conforms reliably even when the surface is curved or angled. This conformability helps maintain strong and consistent seal. It maintains consistent bondline aesthetics under normal stress loads. The inconspicuous dark gray color of 3M tape WT4112 helps to ensure high satisfaction among consumers.
4. Non-liner side adhesive
The non-liner side forms an immediate, consistent and durable bond to most EPDM formulations and TPE materials.
Helps optimize application processes
3M™ Acrylic Plus Tape WT4112 is supplied on a levelwound roll to enable a range of options for efficient processing including manual, semi-automated and automation-ready solutions. It can seamlessly integrate into current semi-automated and fully automated tape application processes and allows for continuous lamination to seals during extrusion and post-processing.
3M Acrylic Plus Tape WT4108 and WT4112 complement 3M’s already extensive line of weatherstrip attachment solutions. Utilizing proprietary technology, this weatherstrip attachment tape is designed to adhere to a wide variety of paints, including low surface energy and improved scratch- and mar-resistant paints.
3M Acrylic Plus Tape WT4100 Series tapes offer customers more robust solutions for weatherstrip applications, including primary door seals, lamp seals, and sunroof seals. This product offers customers the potential for:
• Heat-activated adhesive on the non-liner side forms an immediate, consistent and durable bond to most EPDM formulations and TPE materials • Excellent adhesion to a wide variety of automotive paints, including the improved scratch-and mar-resistant, low surface energy, and traditional paint systems • Combination of high initial adhesion with a stress handling core for demanding applications • Acrylic foam core uniquely designed for excellent conformability of the seal to the substrate, delivers excellent wet-out • Helps provide design flexibility • Can be applied as a continuous seal of the weatherstrip profile to the vehicle sheet metal, lasting the life of the vehicle • Dark gray core and black adhesive provides improved bond-line aesthetics3M Acrylic Plus Tapes offer a wide range of performance enhancements over conventional 3M AFT Tapes for a variety of applications. The product is more robust, allowing for greater flexibility in design on future programs and improved reliability on existing programs. 3M Acrylic Plus Tape WT4100 Series is the most recent in tape technology from the tape leader, 3M.
The processing, tabbing, and splicing of 3M WT4100 tapes will be comparable to other heat-activated 3M Acrylic Plus and 3M Acrylic Foam Tapes.
We recommended 3M™ Tabbing Tape 5400, 5081, or 5082 for heat-bond tabbing or 5300 for pressure sensitive adhesive tabbing. An extended tab liner tab or heatbond tab is recommended instead of a pressure sensitive adhesive tab.
There is a simple procedure that will demonstrate the bond strength. Remove the liner from the taped part and laminate a strip of anodized aluminum. When peeling the aluminum off at a 90° angle, you should witness a cohesive failure of the tape, not failure of the heat-bond adhesive to the rubber.
Yes, you still need to use a promoter to adhere to many plastics trim components, EPDM and TPV seals. As with conventional 3M Acrylic Foam Tapes, no adhesion promoter is necessary for adhesion to paint. Work with your application engineer to determine feasibility for your specific application.
Yes. Cleaning is recommended if contaminants are present that may impede tape adhesion, such as dirt, oils, or dust. It is a good safeguard in assembly plants and has been made much easier with the development of 3M™ Scotch-Brite™ High Performance Wipes.
The product is designed to sustain a temperature range of -40°F to 200°F (-40°C to 90°C) over the life of the vehicle.
